The eleven Health Professional Registration Boards and Councils are each established under a particular Act to regulate the health professionals who fall within their jurisdiction.

The Boards and Councils are independent statutory authorities which report annually to the Minister.

Their members are appointed by the Governor on the nomination of the Minister.

The Boards are:

  • Chiropractors and Osteopaths Registration Board ;
  • Dental Board of Tasmania;
  • Dental Prosthetists Registration Board;
  • Medical Council of Tasmania;
  • Medical Radiation Science Professionals Registration Board;
  • Nursing Board of Tasmania;
  • Optometrists Registration Board;
  • Pharmacy Board of Tasmania;
  • Physiotherapists Registration Board;
  • Podiatrists Registration Board; and the
  • Psychologists Registration Board.

Generally, the functions of the Boards are as follows:

  • to administer the scheme of practitioner registration;
  • to supervise the practice of the relevant health service in this State;
  • to investigate complaints and, as necessary, undertake disciplinary action against registered practitioners;
  • to prosecute offences against the Act;
  • to monitor the standard and provision of the relevant health service in Tasmania;
  • to monitor standards of education and training in the relevant health service;
  • to advise the Minister on matters relating to the Act.
