Food Legislation

In September 2001, Tasmania adopted three (3) National Food Safety Standards (FSS) under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (notified in the Tasmanian Government Gazette on 5th September 2001).

The current enforceable Food Safety Standards in Tasmania are:

  1. Standard 3.1.1 (Interpretation & Application);
  2. Standard 3.2.2 (Food Safety Practices & General Requirements); and
  3. Standard 3.2.3 (Food Premises & Equipment).

The introduction of Standard 3.2.1 (Food Safety Programs) has been delayed until further research has been undertaken to establish the benefits and costs of instigating compulsory food safety programs.

The Food Act 2003 (proclaimed on 15 October 2003) replaces the Food Act 1998 and introduces provisions that are based on nationally agreed model. This approach is designed to provide a high degree of consistency of food safety administration across Australia, which should benefit both consumers and industry.
