The Tobacco Coalition was established in 2004 to enable stakeholders from both government and non-government sectors with an interest in tobacco issues to work together to:
- Reduce the prevalence of smoking in Tasmania in accordance with Tasmania Together benchmarks; and
- Provide the framework for the coordination, implementation and review of the Tasmanian Tobacco Action Plan 2006-2010.
Tasmania Together benchmarks relating to smoking aim to reduce the number of adult smokers to 16% by 2010, 12% by 2015 and 10% by 2020.
The objectives of the Coalition are to:
- Develop strategies and provide advice and recommendations to Government and the Department of Health and Human Services to facilitate implementation of the Tasmanian Tobacco Action Plan 2006-2010;
- Enhance coordination and communication between government Departments and service providers;
- Provide strong, identifiable leadership for addressing the smoking issue in Tasmania ; and
- Help inform decision making about resource allocation relating to tobacco issues.
Membership
The Tobacco Coalition is made up of stakeholders from government and non-government sectors who have broad expertise in tobacco issues and can guide and inform on the application and development of strategies to address tobacco issues in Tasmania .

Representatives from other groups are invited to join as appropriate.
Meetings
Meetings of the Tobacco Coalition are held quarterly. The Tobacco Coalition is chaired by a representative elected by members of the Coalition.
