Programs & Strategies
Housing Tasmania aims to ensure access to adequate, affordable, appropriate and secure housing for Tasmanians on low-incomes.
The services and programs provided by Housing Tasmania include:
- Public Rental Assistance which is funded and administered directly by Housing Tasmania, and enables eligible low-income Tasmanians to access low-cost public rental housing.
- Private Rental Assistance which is funded by Housing Tasmania but delivered by community organisations, and provides assistance for low-income Tasmanians to access rental properties in the private rental market.
- Community Sector Housing which is funded partly or fully by Government but managed by community organisations to deliver a range programs and housing options to key target groups. These include, for example, the Aboriginal Rental Housing Program, supported tenancies and a range of innovative housing models such as housing co-operatives.
- Home Ownership Assistance which is funded by Housing Tasmania to provide home ownership opportunities to low-income Tasmanians seeking to own a home of their own.
- Supported Accommodation Assistance which provides assistance to Tasmanians who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Services to Housing Tasmania clients are provided State-wide through a four-area service delivery model, incorporating seven local service centres and the State Administration office in Hobart. Some programs are delivered by community organisations on behalf of Housing Tasmania.
A recent initiative has been the creation of Tasmanian Affordable Housing Limited which will be an independent, not for-profit-organisation, and will lease new properties from the private sector. These properties will then be made available to low-income Tasmanians eligible for public housing.
Housing Tasmania is funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments through the Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement and Supported Accommodation Assistance Program. Housing Tasmania also generates revenue through the collection of rental income from its residential properties.
