Call for Registrations of Interest – housing construction
The Council of Australian Governments’ Nation Building and Jobs Plan has the potential to provide additional funding of up to $150 million to Tasmania to increase the quality and supply of social housing.
This means that total government investment for new supply of social and affordable housing in Tasmania may reach as high as $200 million over the next three and a half years.
The increased investment provides a massive opportunity to Tasmania’s development and construction industry. The Tasmanian community will benefit as a whole from the increased supply of social and affordable housing and other initiatives targeted at reducing homelessness.
As a first step, Housing Tasmania is seeking registrations of interest in the immediate and future provision of new housing. Registrations are sought from builders, developers, not-for profit Housing Associations either individually or in partnership.
New homes wanted immediately!
To kick start Tasmania’s response to the Economic Stimulus Package, Housing Tasmania is looking to immediately purchase 30 new, previously unoccupied homes for social housing across Tasmania that will meet the following criteria:
- are reaching completion or can be completed for transfer to the Director of Housing prior to 30 June 2009
- are well planned and located close to public transport, employment opportunities, schools and health/community services
- are high quality and reflect universal access design principles
- have environmentally sustainable design features
- meet the needs of social housing clients
- represent value for money
- are located in Housing Tasmania target areas
The target areas for these spot purchases are Launceston, West Tamar, Burnie, Devonport / Port Sorell, Clarence, Hobart, Kingston and Sorell. The homes must be two bedroom houses or units.
Registrations of interest are sought from any interested parties with a new home(s) to sell that meets the above criteria. All submissions will be considered on merit and preference will be given to early submissions.

Future social and affordable housing projects
Housing Tasmania is embarking on a massive development and construction program over the next three and a half years and will continue to purchase many more houses over this time.
Registrations of interest are sought in relation to future residential construction projects that will be ready for occupancy by 2011. These may be projects that are currently in the planning and design stages or have recently commenced construction. House and land packages, development proposals and projects that are partly developed or funded will be considered.
Future residential construction projects will also need to meet the criteria above but can be completed for transfer to the Director of Housing up until 30 June 2011.
