Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program (MSOAP)

The aims and objectives of MSOAP

The Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program (MSOAP) improves the access of people living in rural and remote Tasmania to medical specialist services by complementing outreach specialist services provided by the state governments.

This is achieved by providing specialists with financial assistance to cover some of the costs associated with delivering outreach services, such as travel, accommodation and consulting room hire costs, as well as for upskilling and/or professional support to local general practitioners, specialists and other health professionals.

The delivery and support of outreach medical specialist services has achieved considerable success over the last four years. MSOAP provides more than 45 specialist services annually to rural and remote communities.

MSOAP also endeavours to increase and maintain the skills of regional, rural and remote health professionals, including the effective communication between visiting specialists and local health professionals in Tasmania’s remote communities.

The Commonwealth Government has committed funding over three years, commencing in 2008 to support MSOAP. This will improve rural and remote community access to a range of medical specialist services. This funding will provide opportunities for MSOAP services, and potentially reduce waiting lists for people in rural and remote communities to obtain treatment.

The Department of Health and Human Services is the fund holder for MSOAP in Tasmania.

Program Activity

The Program has been operating in Tasmania for over five years and has delivered thousands of patient consultations in rural and remote areas.

Communities from across the state have benefited from the services of a visiting specialist in areas including psychiatry, palliative care, surgery, dermatology, urology, rheumatology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and oncology.
