Correctional Health Services

Tasmania's Correctional Health Services provide outpatient and inpatient health services for offenders in the community, on remand, at Hayes Prison Farm and at Risdon Prison. Services include mental health services and general (primary) health services.

Significant improvements to health services for offenders are currently being made through the Correctional Health Services Renewal Project. These improvements include:

  • better mental health services for offenders, including development of a Secure Mental Health Unit (The Wilfred Lopes Centre for Forensic Mental Health);
  • better outpatient health services for prisoners at Remand Centres, Hayes Prison Farm and at the new Risdon Prison; and
  • a 6-bed primary inpatient health facility under development at the new Risdon Prison.

The management of health services at Risdon Prison has been transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services.
