Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex Reference Group

What is the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex Reference Group?

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex (GLBTI) Reference Group was formed in December 1999 to provide advocacy and guidance to the DHHS on GLBTI related issues. The group consists of GLBTI representatives and DHHS staff who share a commitment to protecting and enhancing the health and wellbeing of GLBTI people. The Group’s goal is to ensure optimal access to all relevant mainstream and where appropriate, specialist health services for GLBTI people.

The GLBTI Reference Group has the following responsibilities:

  • To provide a forum for discussion about issues relating to the provision of health and community services for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
  • To enable gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people to raise issues of importance and concern about policy development, service provision and consultation with DHHS.
  • To provide a point of access for GLBTI information and seek input into departmental policies, research projects and strategic directions of the DHHS.
  • To provide a forum for the oversight and monitoring of existing and future collaboration processes between DHHS and GLBTI people, including the establishment, where required, of specific issue working groups.
