Becoming a Dental Technician

How do I become a Dental Technician?

To become a dental technician in Tasmania you must complete a traineeship in dental technology which includes:

  • Workplace based training in a clinical setting; and
  • A theoretical component through a training organisation

What is a dental technician?

A dental technician is an essential member of the dental team who is highly skilled in the design, construction, repair and adjustment of a variety of dentures, dental appliances and mouthguards. Dental technicians are professionals who work from a written prescription and direct communication with the dental prosthetist or dentist. Dental technicians do not have direct patient contact.

A career as a dental technician would be a good choice for people who like working with tools and equipment, and apply a high level of attention to detail and precision, have good time management skills and possess good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. In addition, if you have an artistic ability to construct form and design you have some of the qualities that make you well suited to pursue a dental technician career.

What do dental technicians do?

The dental technician constructs and repairs dentures and other dental appliances including crowns and bridges. Dental technicians also make mouthguards.
