Tasmanian Health Organisation — North West
"While my mainland counterparts might be competing with a large number of other junior doctors to be included in procedures, those opportunities were far easier to obtain at the North West Regional Hospital"
Luke Mitchell, Registrar
It’s an exciting time to join the Tasmanian Health Organisation — North West (THO — NW), as you’d be working as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team of over 1200 full time equivalent (FTE) staff to make a real difference in the community. The THO — NW is led by CEO Gavin Austin and incorporates community health services, Mersey Community Hospital and North West Regional Hospital.
Our Health Organisation
By integrating community and acute care services our goal is to create seamless pathways for our patients across the system. We want to support our patients every step of the way, and we’re developing new and innovative ways to make this happen.
The THO — NW is governed by a matrix style organisational structure, which focuses on three streams of care: Acute, Elective, and Chronic, Complex and Community Care. These streams are led by three General Managers, who are also site managers for either Mersey Community Hospital, North West Regional or community health services.
The THO — NW serves a population of over 100,000 and we face a number of challenges with high levels of chronic disease and an ageing population.
We’re meeting the challenge head on by taking our services as close to people’s homes as possible.
This provides unique opportunities for you to work across one or more of our diverse sites, ensuring you get maximum exposure to a range of opportunities to advance your skills.
Our hospitals have a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program and are affiliated with the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School, as well as TAFE Tasmania. Our range of core specialities allow you to experience the wide range of medical presentations and illnesses, with diverse and interesting caseloads. Our excellent training and career pathways provide unique opportunities to develop your skills in a wide variety of areas, which might not be as possible in a larger metropolitan settings.
Talk to us if you would like a fellow medical student to join you on a placement with us. We recognise sharing the NW experience can be more fun. We also have great links with the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School
