Professional registration

You will need to be registered to work in Tasmania if you are a:

• Chiropractor
• Dentist
• Doctor
• Nurse or Midwife
• Optometrist
• Osteopath
• Pharmacist
• Physiotherapist
• Podiatrist
• Psychologist

We may provide a subsidy for registration or professional association membership fees may be payable. We can provide support and advice to navigate these processes.

You must be registered with, or eligible for conditional registration by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). APHRA is responsible for the registration and accreditation of 10 health professions across Australia. AHPRA supports the 10 National Boards that are responsible for regulating the 10 health professions. The boards will consider every registration application carefully to ensure all practitioners granted registration have the qualifications, skills and experience to provide safe care to the Australian public.

Every doctor practising medicine in Australia must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia. The APHRA website includes information for International Medical graduates. The Australian Medical Council assesses international medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to practise medicine in Australia.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has established State and Territory Boards to support the work of the National Board in the national scheme. The National Board sets policy and professional standards, and the State and Territory Boards make individual notification and registration decisions affecting individual nurses and midwives.
