Careers in Occupational Therapy

Mental Health Services Tasmania has a range of challenging career opportunities for occupational therapists who are looking to further specialise or extend their experience in mental health.

Our dynamic team works from a community-based, multidisciplinary, integrated service model within a recovery approach across the lifespan for

  • children and adolescents (infancy – 18 years)
  • adults (18- 65 years)
  • older persons (65 plus years)

Community-based, inpatient and extended care services are available in all three regions of the state.

Occupational therapists have the chance to specialise in the following areas within mental health:

  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Crisis assessment and intervention
  • Family therapy
  • Inpatient and community forensic services
  • Specialised occupational therapy assessment & intervention that facilitates a consumer’s occupational performance (living skills, education, work and  leisure) in the context of mental illness eg functional assessment, sensory processing,
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation
  • Early intervention
  • Providing specialist consultation to other service providers
  • Supervision and leadership

The Mental Health Service provides a supportive work environment with a well developed supervision model. Professional development opportunities are supported and encouraged through internal and external courses relevant to your area of practice and interest. Student education is well established through undergraduate and postgraduate clinical placements with a range of universities. Opportunities exist to undertake projects and research in collaboration with other clinicians and tertiary institutions.
