Royal Hobart Hospital

Our RHH is Tasmania’s largest hospital and the major referral centre. As the major centre of clinical teaching and research, it has a strong collaborative relationship with the University of Tasmania and other institutions and comprises the well-known RHH site in the Hobart city centre; the Geriatric Evaluation & Management Unit and the Transition Care Unit at the old Repatriation complex in Davey Street; and the Renal Unit at St John’s Park in New Town.

Tasmanians deserve to have access to modern medical care and state-of-the-art facilities, as such our RHH site is undergoing strategic redevelopment works to meet current and future demand. In addition to the implementation of innovative practices, the redevelopment will ensure that accessibility and patient flow in clinic areas and wards continues to be improved and educational facilities, staff and patient amenity areas are redeveloped.

Services and facilities

Our facilities and services, are contemporary and innovative.

The benefits of technology were recently on show as our Tasmanian Burns Unit demonstrated an innovative clinic consultation in partnership with our North West Regional Hospital. Known as the Tasmanian TeleBurns Clinic, it enables patients in the north west access to follow-up consultations in specialist clinics without having to travel to Tasmanian Health Organisation — South. Through the use of high definition video conferencing, care team members at the RHH can use their virtual clinic to continue quality patient care after discharge.

The RHH offers up to date technology. The latest addition to our Medical Imaging Department was a cutting edge technology that will assist save the lives of people with vascular disease - a new Bi-Plane Vascular/Digital Subtraction Angiography X-Ray System Suite. Reduced waiting time for complex procedures is just one of the benefits, as this new equipment will also result in better and quicker treatment and care of patients.

We have a Respecting Patient Choices Program which is a structured program to support advance care planning. Advance care planning is a process enabling a patient to make decisions about their future health care in consultation with their health care providers, family members and other important people in their lives.

Supportive work environment

The RHH provides a friendly and supportive work environment. We also have many programs to make a difference for staff and the community. These include Enviro RHH designed to raise awareness of environmental issues with staff and visitors, to facilitate changes in practice for environmental gains, and to ensure that environmental issues are considered in the redevelopment of the RHH.

Eat Well RHH promotes good health, eating and nutrition for staff, to benefit their health and wellness. We also have a Health and Fitness Centre to provide personalised exercise options and to promote good health, well-being and to have fun. The Centre is equipped with modern computerised aerobic equipment and both pin loaded and free weight resistance machines.

The RHH also holds regular social events for staff and the community. These include a ball, an Intern of the Year Award dinner and many more formal and informal events.
