Ambulance Officers

The Tasmanian Ambulance Service promotes and provides integrated high quality emergency care, rescue and patient transport to the Tasmanian Community.

The roles of our Service are to provide pre-hospital care; specialised patient transport; medical transfers; and public education. We achieve this through a system of permanent officers, volunteer officers and the support of independent services.

Student Ambulance Officer

We are looking for people who:

  • are motivated to achieve something meaningful through their work
  • enjoy varied and challenging opportunities
  • wish to assist the community by being active members of the health care team and contribute to the preservation and restoration of health for the people of Tasmania.

Ambulance work demands patience, tolerance, kindness and an ability to handle stress. The work is often emotionally and physically demanding and you must be of good health and fitness and possess an ability to remain calm in emergency situations and be able to deal with a wide variety of people.

You need to be able to communicate effectively in all situations and environments, and be able to work as a team member or in isolation depending on the circumstances. The ability to be able to attain high clinical skills, with a commitment to ongoing study programs, is also required.

Because emergency health care is constantly changing and improving, training and continuing education is important. Student Ambulance Officers continually learn new skills and gain greater knowledge. Working for the Ambulance Service is a unique, versatile and rewarding career.

Training

Student Ambulance Officers are required to enter and pass all the theory and practical units of a two-year course of study leading to the qualification "Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic)". The course involves residentials, seminars, practicums, distance education, workplace internships and clinical placements. When on training, accommodation is to be provided in lieu of Travel Allowance.

HECS Fees

The HECS fees associated with the Student Ambulance Officers Course (Diploma of Health Science Pre Hospital Care), are the responsibility of the student undertaking the program.
