Culture
Tasmanians prides themselves on a vibrant cultural community rich in art, history, music and design.
Every type of music is appreciated - from bands in local pubs to full auditoriums listening to the sounds of the highly acclaimed Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Music is enjoyed all year round, as local musicians forge their name and gain followings on Tasmanian shores and beyond.
Tasmania possesses specialised local collections of cultural and natural heritage displayed in locations throughout the State. Larger and more comprehensive collections are also showcased at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston.
Drama, puppetry, comedy and visual arts are all part of Tasmania’s culture with the ‘Ten Days on the Island’ festival showcasing visual acts and artists from Tasmania and other islands from around the world. The biennial festive was launched in 2001 and links Tasmania with other island cultures including New Zealand, Ireland, Iceland and Madagascar.
Various cultural events highlight local talent and produce throughout the state. The ‘Taste of Tasmania’, held annually during the Christmas period on Hobart’s waterfront is not only home to all the delights of Tasmanian wine and produce but also celebrates Tasmanian culture through plays, music, jazz and cabaret shows.
