Returning to Nursing

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) welcomes nurses back to the workforce.

Commonwealth Grants

Nurses or Midwives returning to practice may be eligible for grants through the Commonwealth initiative Bringing Nurses Back into the Workforce Program. Nurses and midwives who have not been employed for 12 months or longer may be eligible for a BNBW grant.

The DHHS provide supportive programs to assist nurses returning to practice.

Re-entry to Practice Program

Nurses are required by the Nursing Board of Tasmania to undertake a Re-Entry to Practice Program if they have been out of practice for greater than 5 years and do not hold a current practicing certificate. For information about your eligibility please contact the Nursing Board of Tasmania.

The Department of Health and Human Services is currently collaborating with education providers to establish a new, flexible program to meet the educational needs of individual nurses.

Refresher Programs

Programs are available for nurses who are currently registered or enrolled and requiring support to return to practice or to move areas of practice. The programs are structured to meet individual learning needs of nurses and provide paid clinical placements.
