The Royal Hobart Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is Tasmania’s largest hospital and a major teaching and research hospital. The RHH works closely with the University of Tasmania’s Faculty of Health Sciences.

The RHH provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services, excluding organ transplant, spinal surgery and paediatric cardiac surgery.

It also provides a number of state-wide services including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, burns treatment, hyperbaric and diving medicine, neonatal intensive care and high-risk obstetrics.

The Hospital services a population of approximately 240,000 people, and has 525 beds (including 86 day-only beds).

It is the largest employer in the State, employing approximately 2,204 full time equivalent staff . On average, 143 patients are admitted each day, and the hospital admits more than 52,000 patients annually. The Royal Hobart Hospital performs over 15,000 operations each year and on average its patients stay in hospital 3.9 days.

The Hospital is fully accredited and has an enviable reputation for high standards of research. Our RHH Research Foundation Incorporated promotes and funds medical, healthcare and biomedical research.

Launceston General Hospital

The Launceston General Hospital (LGH) is the second largest hospital in the State and provides a diverse range of medical, specialist and health professional services. As a teaching hospital of the University of Tasmania it also provides a range of tertiary surgical and medical services in most major specialties.

The LGH is a 300-bed public hospital providing acute care facilities for residents of Launceston and the northern region of Tasmania. Every year the LGH treats over 24,000 inpatients and over 225,000 outpatients.

A major medical research facility (The Cliff ord Craig Medical Research Trust) is also based at the LGH and encourages applications for research grants.

The North West Regional Hospital

The North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) is an accredited teaching hospital offering a comprehensive range of general and specialist health services.

NWRH is a 160 bed public facility situated beside a 70 bed private hospital, a medical centre that provides pathology, pharmacy and imaging services, and the North West Rural Clinical School – University of Tasmania.

In 2006-07 NWRH at Burnie provided 7,486 inpatient separations and 80,632 occasions of service to outpatients. In addition the hospital dealt with 24,432 presentations to the Department of Emergency Medicine.
