Child Protection Services prefer to talk to a notifier in order to aid them in gathering information. However, if it is after hours and you are a mandatory reporter, an online notification can also be made. See below.
The role of Child Protection Services is to protect children and young people who are at risk of abuse or neglect. In Tasmania, the protection of children and young people is covered by the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1997. In August 2009, amendments were made to the Act. The general public are encouraged to phone Child Protection with their concerns on 1300 737 639, which automatically refers them to the office in the area from where they are dialling.
Most professionals who provide services to children and families in Tasmania are "mandatory reporters" of child abuse, under the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1997. This includes, but is not limited to, the following groups:
- DHHS employees
- Child Care providers
- Dentists, dental therapists or dental hygienists
- Police officers and probation officers
- Registered medical practitioners and nurses
- School principals and teachers
- Volunteers and employees of any organisation that provides health, welfare, education, care or residential services and which receives government funding.
As a DHHS employee, if you believe, suspect or know of a child who maybe at risk of abuse or neglect, you are bound by law to make a notification to Child Protection Services. For more information on these responsibilities, please see the Information Sheet: Responsibilities of Mandatory Reporters.

All adults in Tasmania have a responsibility to report suspected or actual child abuse or neglect.
An online notification can be made by clicking here (recommended for use by Mandatory Reporters) or a notification can also be made by telephoning or emailing Child Protection Services on 1300 737 639 which will divert automatically to the office in the area from which the caller is dialling. Notifications via Gateway Services
In August 2009, amendments were made to the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1997. Now, notifications can also be made to Gateway Services by telephoning the number below. (For more information on the amendments, click here).Gateway Services provide Family Services to vulnerable children, young people and their families to protect and promote their healthy development. Families requiring these services often have complex needs which can adversely impact on a child's development if appropriate supports and interventions are not provided in a timely manner.
A community-based Child Protection Worker works in each of the Gateway Services and is able to act on notifications of neglect and abuse. There is no online form to make a notification to a Gateway Services, but the contact details are below.
