CYS Family Violence Action Plan

Background

On 13 August 2015, the Government released Safe Homes, Safe Families Tasmania's Family Violence Action Plan 2015 – 2020 (Safe Homes, Safe Families). Safe Homes, Safe Families is the Government's new, coordinated, whole-of-government action plan to respond to family violence. It provides a coordinated approach to respond effectively to the issues associated with family violence.

Department of Health and Human Services was involved in the development phase of the action plan along with other key government agencies including:

  • Department of Justice
  • Department of Police and Emergency Management
  • Department of Education and
  • Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Nineteen actions have been identified as key priorities to improving the Government's response to family violence. Children and Youth Services is responsible for the implementation of two of the 19 actions:

Action 8: extend counselling services for children and young people experiencing family violence by improving access to services. Growing up in a violent home and being exposed to sexual assault can affect a child's learning, health, relationships, work prospects and participation in community life. There is a considerable wait list for counselling and this commitment will deliver up to ten additional counsellors and will be delivered in partnership with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and

Action 9: provide additional counselling services for adults experiencing family violence by delivering services in partnership with NGOs and improving access to timely, dedicated counselling. This will assist in supporting groups of people within our community at higher risk, which includes women with disabilities, women from CALD communities and Aboriginal women.
