KPMG Review of Social and Affordable Housing

Features

The KPMG review of Social and Affordable Housing is exploring the future sustainability of Tasmania’s public housing system, including the potential benefits of moving to an improved model of service delivery.

The review will also consider how Tasmania can best position itself to respond to the numerous system reforms required under the National Building – Economic Stimulus Plan and National Affordable Housing Agreement.

KPMG have been commissioned to conduct a public consultation process on the future of public housing in Tasmania, including a review of all potential service models.

Following the completion of a preliminary consultation process, KPMG provided a report in February 2009 stating that analysis of the broad social and affordable housing system would be required before any conclusive recommendations about the future direction of public housing in Tasmania could be drawn.

The KPMG review has now been extended until the end of June 2009. The scope of the review has been expanded to include the broader social and affordable housing sector and to take account of emerging housing reforms at a national level. It will also undertake further detailed analysis of the social, economic and financial outcomes of each of the potential service models options under consideration.

The second phase of the KPMG review is being guided by a high level Working Group comprised of key community stakeholders, Housing Tasmania, and the Housing Innovations Unit.

It is expected that a final report will be provided to Cabinet for decision by the end of June 2009.
