Younger People in Residential Aged Care Program
For many years it has been recognised that residential aged care is not the most appropriate accommodation for younger people with a disability.
This growing awareness culminated in the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) announcing the Young People in Residential Aged Care initiative in February 2006.
Younger people with a disability who are either living in residential aged care or at risk of entering residential aged care are eligible for this Program. Participation is entirely voluntary.
The Program has three main objectives:
- To improve the delivery of disability services to younger people with a disability who chose to remain in residential aged care or for whom residential aged care remains the only available suitable option.
- To divert young people with a disability who are at risk of entering residential age care to more appropriate accommodation
- To assist young people with a disability living in residential aged care to move to more appropriate accommodation where available
Further information about the Young People in Residential Aged Care Program is provided in the Fact Sheet.
