Future Health - Tasmania's Health Plan

To meet the challenges faced by our health system today, tomorrow and for years to come, we need a comprehensive and strategic health plan for our State.

Tasmania’s Health Plan will transform the delivery of health care across Tasmania and guide it’s development for up to 15 years.

The Plan will help us to create a safe, sustainable and efficient health system that provides all Tasmanian people the care they need when they need it. It will build closer relationships between our hospitals and our community health services.

Why do we need to change the health system?

Our health system is facing a number of challenges that we
cannot afford to ignore:

  • A dramatic increase in chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma.
  • An ageing population that increases the need for
    health services.
  • Increasing costs of health care, with health inflation higher than average inflation.
  • A rapidly ageing workforce and difficulties in staff
    recruitment.
  • Duplication of some services spreading our workforce and budget resources too thinly.

A failure to act now will worsen the current situation. We can’t afford to put Tasmanians at risk and we can’t afford to place our staff under pressure to deliver unsustainable services.

The reform process needs to start now so we can meet the
health challenges of the next decade and beyond.
