Cervical Cancer Prevention Program
The Tasmanian Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (CCPP) is part of the State Department of Health and Human Services in the Cancer Screening and Control Services business unit. The National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) is jointly funded by the Australian State and Territory governments.
Pap smear registers operate in each State and Territory. Registers keep a confidential record of Pap smear results and provide a valuable and confidential backup system.
The registers have an important role in data collection and research for the National Cervical Screening Program. The TCCR provides overdue safety net follow up reminder services to women, medical practitioners, Pap smear providers and laboratories. In particular the register:
- Provides the laboratory and/or the Pap smear provider with results of previous smears so that there is appropriate follow up;
- Records Pap smear and cervical cancer test results of women;
- Provides de-identified data to researchers and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) for statistical purposes.
Under the Public Health Act 1997 (ss. 137-142) the Registry receives cervical cancer test results from the laboratory that processed the test. If a woman does not wish to be on the register, she must tell her doctor each time she has a Pap smear.
The Register is a free service for women and can help by:
- Providing a safety net reminder service;
- Sending reminders when Pap smears are overdue;
- Working with doctors to make sure follow-up care is provided;
- Providing a history of Pap smear and cervical cancer test results.
The Register is not a medical practice so does not provide Pap smears.
Pap smears are provided by medical practitioners, family planning clinics and community health centres (click here for further information).
The Register protects the privacy and confidentiality of Pap smears and cervical cancer test results.
