The North West Regional Hospital Speech Pathology Department provides services at two sites: Burnie (NWRH) and the Devonport Community and Health Services Centre.
North West Regional Hospital
The Speech Pathology Department provides assessment and management services for patients with swallowing difficulties and / or communication impairments:
- Inpatients of the NWRH, including paediatrics
- Patients on the Rehabilitation Unit
- North West Private Hospital, when a comparable service is not available in the private sector
- Adult Outpatients
- Drop In Clinic
Referrals
Inpatient / Outpatient
The Speech Pathology Department accepts referrals from all sources, including self referral. These may be written (letter or Allied Health Professional Services Referral Form) or verbal (in person or over the telephone).
Referrals from the NWRH are managed according to internal procedures.
North West Private Hospital
Referrals from the North West Private Hospital are accepted on the Allied Health Professional Services Referral Form and may be faxed to the Speech Pathology Department on 6430 6688.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation referrals should be directed via the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) on Rehabilitation ward.

Speech Pathology services provided at Devonport include individual and group therapy, consultative services and home programming for children with problems in the areas of language, speech, voice, fluency, eating, literacy and swallowing.
Those eligible to access the service include:
- Children aged between 0 – 4 years who are not accessing another speech pathology service or Early Childhood Intervention Services
- School-aged children enrolled in private schools who are not eligible to receive Speech Pathology support through their school.

The Drop In Clinic is a free consultative service for parents and caregivers who are concerned about their child’s development. Services represented are: Dental (Burnie only), Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Speech Pathology. The service is mainly for pre-school children but school age children may also attend. No referral or appointment is required.
Parents may attend the Drop In Clinic to get advice from a Speech Pathologist about a range of issues including feeding (breast/bottle feeding, getting on to solids), slow speech development, difficulty understanding the child’s speech, stuttering etc.
The Drop In Clinic operates once a month, from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm from February through to December:
The Devonport Community and Health Services Centre: on the first Thursday of the month, in Meeting Room 1.
North West Regional Hospital, Burnie: on the second Thursday of the month, in either the Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy Departments.
