Buying a House

Being able to afford to buy a home is an issue for many Tasmanians and home ownership can sometimes seem out of reach, especially for people on low incomes.

Housing Tasmania can help to make it easier and we offer programs that can reduce the costs of buying a home.

If you are on a low or moderate income, assistance is available to buy a house under the HomeShare and Streets Ahead programs. You may only access either HomeShare OR Streets Ahead assistance, not both.

Some Housing Tasmania properties are also for sale to any purchasers on the open market.

Properties for Sale are placed on the website and updated regularly.

I live in a Housing Tasmania house, can I buy it?

If you are a tenant living in a Housing Tasmania house you can write to us and apply to buy the house. This includes Better Housing Futures tenants. You will need to find out if a bank or other financial institution will approve a home loan for you. In your letter you must include a loan pre-approval form from your bank or financial institution. Housing Tasmania will consider your application and let you know if the house is approved for sale.

You may also be eligible for Streets Ahead or HomeShare assistance to help you buy the house. Tenants living in Housing Tasmania properties do not need to be under income and asset limits.

If you have made any improvements to the house you are renting, you may have the value of improvements discounted from the purchase price of the property. This discount is subject to approval by Housing Tasmania. Housing Tasmania will organise an assessment of the value of improvements.

Housing Tasmania does not have a rent to buy scheme.

Other Assistance

If you are buying your first home, you may also be able to access the First Home Owner Grant. This is provided through the State Revenue Office.

You can also phone Housing Tasmania’s Customer Service Hotline on 1300 665 663 for assistance.
