What is the Tasmanian Mental Health Reform Program?

The Mental Health Integration Taskforce brought many and varied stakeholders together in 2018 to explore best practice for consumer focussed integration of mental health services.

The recommendations and issues raised by the Taskforce inform a new approach to improve the integration of mental health services. The Tasmanian Government accepted all 21 recommendations, grouped into eight actions, and made a commitment to implement these.

The Reform Program is part of the Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS) and works closely with the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist and Mental Health, Alcohol  Drug Directorate (MHADD), Department of Health.

Wrap up of the December Information Sessions

Thank you to all who attended the Information Sessions around the state.

The questions and discussions arising from the sessions were excellent and help us to gain a better understanding of issues, get stakeholders feedback and input into the Reform Program.

Dr Aaron Groves, Chief Psychiatrist and Program Sponsor, recapped the origins of the reform program and outlined the progress to date of the eight actions as outlined in the Government Response.

There was a lot of information covered. Here are a few key highlights:

  • The Mental Health Reform Program team is engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders including: people with lived experience, families and friends, community managed organisations, peak bodies and mental health professionals to explore best practice in implementing the actions of the Reform Program.
  • Working groups, with a broad representation of stakeholders, have been established for the key actions  The first meeting of all working groups was held on Monday 16 December with great success!
  • The plans for the capital builds of the integration hubs at the Peacock Centre and St Johns Park are progressing, we will share updates with you as they become available.
  • Our workforce team are developing an understanding of the staffing needs of our service, including both immediate need and sustainability going forward.  They are engaging with an array of stakeholders to give us the best possible chance of recruiting in a competitive market, and exploring ways to retain and provide opportunities for our current valued staff.

When will the next information session be held?

We are planning to hold information sessions every three months with the next event scheduled for March 2020.
