Mental Health Tribunal Representation Scheme

Advocacy Tasmania coordinates a scheme which offers free and competent representation for people on involuntary mental health orders who are having a hearing before the Mental Health Tribunal. Training and supervised volunteers provide representation across the state. The scheme has been operating since 2003.

Eligibility criteria for the program:

The person is informed that they are to have a hearing before the Mental Health Tribunal.

How to apply for the program:

The scheme operates by contacting the listed person however a person who becomes aware that they may have a hearing in the near future can contact the scheme prior to contact being made with them by a Representative.

Official Visitors

The Official Visitors form an independent body and have three main functions:

To visit in-patient facilities in approved hospitals once a month in order to examine the adequacy of care and treatment provided to patients; and to examine the standard of the facility environment and activities offered to patients.

To investigate complaints.

To investigate suspected contraventions of the Mental Health Act and report them to the Mental Health Tribunal.

Official Visitors act independently and impartially. Patients, family, and staff are all welcome to contact us and information will be treated confidentially.
