The Tasmanian Alcohol Action Plan (the Plan) is being developed as a whole of government framework to tackle the problems associated with alcohol misuse and abuse in our community. It takes into account the National Alcohol Strategy, including specific strategies to address alcohol consumption and ‘binge drinking’ particularly among young people.
The Plan is to be one of three strategic initiatives under the framework of the Tasmanian Drug Strategy 2005-2009 (TDS) being developed by the Inter Agency Working Group on Drugs (IAWGD) on behalf of Government.
The IAWGD is a whole of Government and community representative body reporting through the Department of Health and Human Services to the Hon Lara Giddings. It has representation from the Departments of Health and Human Services; Police and Emergency Management; Justice; Education; Premier and Cabinet; and Treasury and Finance, and the community sector by members of the Local Government Association of Tasmania; the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Council Tasmania; and the Australian National Council on Drugs.
The IAWGD will provide evidence-based policy advice to governments on strategies focusing on the problems caused by excessive consumption of alcohol.
A consultation draft of the plan has been produced to initiate deliberation and generate discussion.
You are invited to contribute to the development of the Tasmanian Alcohol Action Plan by considering and commenting on the consultation draft. The consultation period closes on 26 June 2009.
