The Tasmanian Government has released its new strategic vision and policy framework for palliative care in Tasmania.

The Policy Framework has been informed by key stakeholders including health and community service providers, volunteers, community organisations and the Tasmanian community.

Compassionate Communities is the result of a comprehensive review of the evidence and is designed to embed national standards and best practice approaches to palliative care.

It is also informed by the work of the Better Access to Palliative Care Project (BAPC), 2013 - 2016, which was funded by the Australian Government to enhance palliative care in Tasmania.

Compassionate Communities sets the strategic direction for palliative care policy in Tasmania. It supports the Tasmanian Government's health service reforms and builds on the work of the BAPC program over the past four years.

To ensure accessible, high quality palliative care we must provide supportive and compassionate care that is person-centred and family and carer focused

The policy framework adopts an inclusive whole of community approach to palliative care known as compassionate communities. A compassionate community ifs a community that cares for and supports one another, particularly individuals at end of life and their families and carers.

This approach relies on strong partnerships between the dying person, their families and carers, friends, local community, service providers, volunteers, community organisations and government and non-government agencies. The linking of formal and informal supports as part of a community of care is critical to the delivery of high quality palliative care.

The policy framework presents a vision for palliative care in Tasmania. It identifies six key areas for action that focus on building community engagement, planning for end of life care, providing enhanced bereavement support and developing the palliative care workforce.
