Population Health Services works to improve and promote health and wellbeing for all Tasmanians. Working with many stakeholders across a wide range of sectors and all levels of government, we aim to:
- protect Tasmanians from public and environmental health hazards
- prevent and reduce chronic conditions and injury at the population level
- reduce inequalities in health.
Overseeing the Population Health Services is the Chief Health Officer, Dr Roscoe Taylor, who also holds the statutory position of Director of Public Health, together with:
- Chief Medical Officer, Dr Craig White, who also has responsibility for Cancer Screening and Control Services
- Director of Population Health Operations, Siobhan Harpur, who has responsibility for Public and Environmental Health Services and Population Health and Wellbeing.

Public and Environmental Health Services
We assess and manage public health risks including environmental health, radiation protection and communicable diseases prevention and control; and also monitor and support the health status of Tasmanians to inform decision-making and health priorities.
Office of the Chief Medical Officer
We oversee clinical and related matters including emergency preparedness, research, Pharmaceutical Services Branch, medical workforce, cancer services system development, blood and blood products, organ and tissue donation and the Tasmanian Infection Prevention and Control Unit.
Cancer Screening and Control Services
We work to minimise cancer morbidity and mortality. We comprise four work units: BreastScreen Tasmania, the Cervical Cancer Prevention Program and Cervical Screening Register, the Policy and Education Unit and the monitoring and oversight of the Tasmanian component of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
Population Health and Wellbeing
Our work includes the Healthy Tasmania initiative, physical activity, community nutrition, healthy settings, population health equity; and tobacco, alcohol and public health nutrition policy.
