2019 Tasmanian Population Health Survey FAQ

The Department of Health’s Tasmanian Population Health Survey is open until early November.

More than 6 000 randomly selected Tasmanians aged 18 years and over will be invited to participate by landline or mobile phone. Wherever possible, randomly selected households will receive a letter of invitation in the mail or a text message on their mobile phone before being contacted.

Why do we need this survey?

The information collected in this survey will help us monitor existing and emerging health problems. This improves our health service planning and delivery and ensures that health services meet the needs of all Tasmanians.

How did we get your phone number?

A computer generates phone numbers randomly from all possible numbers in a specific area. Because numbers are computer-generated, some unlisted numbers may be included.

These randomly-selected telephone numbers are then matched to the White Pages to get a postal address. The surname and address are then used to post letters to the selected households telling them about the survey and inviting them to take part. Names and addresses are deleted once letters are posted.

Unlisted numbers are not included in the White Pages and will, therefore, not receive a letter of invitation before being contacted.

Who will contact you?

The Department of Health has commissioned the Social Research Centre, a subsidiary of the Australian National University, to contact randomly-selected households and invite an adult aged 18 years or over to take part in this survey. You can arrange to take part at a time convenient to you.

The Social Research Centre is bound by strict privacy obligations when conducting interviews.

Is it voluntary?

Absolutely! Participation is entirely voluntary and you can withdraw from the survey at any time during the interview or refuse to answer questions you do not like. Interviews usually take 20 minutes, and all information you provide is treated in strict confidence.

Is my privacy protected?

Your anonymity and the confidentiality of your responses are protected. Name and address details are used only to deliver the letters of invitation and are deleted once the letters have been posted. We do not keep your name or address.

The information we request in the interview is limited to where you live, that is, your postcode and suburb, which cannot identify you.

The survey is carried out in line with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004 (Tas) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

How do I agree to participate?

Your participation is voluntary and your consent to participate in this survey will be implied by you agreeing to take part in this survey. If you change your mind during the interview, you are free to withdraw at any time and can do so without providing an explanation. Alternatively, you may refuse to provide information to specific questions.

Can I get the results of this survey?

We will publish the survey results online starting from about February/March 2020. To view reports of previous surveys, please go to our epidemiology webpage

Tasmanian Population Health Survey 2019

We are writing to ask for your help with an important survey about the health of Tasmanians, called the Tasmanian Population Health Survey.

The Tasmanian Department of Health conducts this survey every few years to track the health, lifestyles and well-being of Tasmanians. They have appointed the Social Research Centre to telephone randomly selected households, and ask them to participate in a confidential and anonymous telephone interview.

A representative from theSocial Research Centremay telephone your household in the next couple of weeks to invite an adult to answer a number of health-related questions. This will take approximately 20 minutes and arrangements can be made for you to participate at a time that is more convenient for you.

The information collected will be used by the Department of Health to support planning, implementation and evaluation of health services and programs in Tasmania.

Your participation is entirely voluntary. However, in order for us to collect accurate information, it is important that as many households as possible participate in this survey.

All information is treated in strict confidence. No identifying personal details are recorded in the survey.  The information is stored by the Department of Health and can only be reported on in aggregate form at a population level.
