Adoption Process

Tasmania has signed the Hague Convention on the Rights of Children in Intercountry Adoption. This is a service for children.

Interested prople will need to attend an Information Session prior to receiving the Application package. All issues of local adoption and intercountry adoption will be discussed including eligibility information and costs. Costs vary between countries.

The process includes:

  • attendance at an information session;
  • preparation of initial documentation including, police checks;
  • assessment over a period of 6 months by an Adoption Worker;
  • preparation of a country project;
  • attendance at a weekend workshop;
  • approval of application;
  • if approved to go on the register, then the preparation of the file for overseas;
  • file sent;
  • await allocation (this wait can vary from 6 months to 2 years);
  • travel to the country to collect the allocated child;
  • post placements report; and
  • full adoption in the courts.

Each country has a set of costs and documents required which will be discussed at that session. These information sessions are run 4 times a year.

Some of the eligibility criteria include:

  • applicants must be under 50 years of age when file is sent to the country of choice; and
  • if married, have been married for 3 years (or can prove they have cohabited for 3 years); and
  • must also be residents of Tasmania.
