Health Assessments and why they are important

Assessments are used to monitor how your child is growing and developing. They can also identify health issues so you can seek help as soon as possible.

The Child and Family Health Nurse or General Practitioner will measure your child’s:

  • growth – height, weight and head circumference
  • development – movement, language and social skills

Children are routinely assessed at:

  • birth
  • 1 – 2 weeks
  • 6 – 8 weeks
  • 6 months
  • 18 months
  • 3 1/2 years

If you would like your child to have the assessments, make an appointment to visit your Child and Family Health Nurse and/or General Practitioner.

Note: Health assessments are only one way of identifying concerns about your children.

As children are continually growing and developing, problems may occur at any time. It is recommended that you consult your Child and Family Health Nurse or General Practitioner if you have any concerns.
