Babies and children grow quickly. They require good nutrition and rely totally on their parents to provide them with the right food so they grow and develop properly.
For the first 12 months of life, breastmilk or infant formula is a baby’s main food. However, when a baby is ready (about 6 months) solid food can be introduced. Solids are needed to provide extra energy and iron.
How will I know my baby is ready?
Babies are ready for solid foods when they:-

start to sit upright when supported

show an interest in watching adults eat

have an increased appetite
What foods should be offered?

first, baby cereals (use those which have added iron), fruit, vegetables and meats

then later, other cereals such as bread, rice and pasta
It is not advisable to add sugar or salt to your baby’s food. Do not give honey to babies under 12 months of age.
How to introduce solids

Babies are individuals and will eat different amounts and different foods. Offer the solid food after the milk food.

Begin with about a teaspoon of food, gradually increasing this as baby’s appetite grows. At first, foods should be pureed, then later mashed and finally presented as finger foods.
Aim: to encourage babies to be eating most family foods by 12 to 18 months.
