Toilet Training

Toilet training is an important developmental stage for children which usually occurs between 2 and 3 years. By this time a child shows:

a level of understanding

  • can point to parts of their body (eg nose, eyes, mouth, hair)
  • has an understanding of wet and dry
  • will sit and stand
  • will imitate you in a simple game or task (eg pat-a-cake)
  • will bring a toy
  • will put 2 objects together (eg put a block in a box)
  • will be able to indicate in some way that he/she is about to do a wee or a poo (eg by facial expression,
  • pointing or talking)

physical readiness

  • walks well
  • sits, stands and squats by themselves
  • can remove some clothing (eg pants)
