Your rights as a consumer

As a person in contact with Child Health and Family Services, you retain your rights regardless of political, cultural, religious or economic background. You have the right not to be discriminated against because of your sex, age, race or any physical or mental disability.

You have the right to:

  • Appropriate quality, professional services and to be given information about these services;
  • Receive a response to your request for any service with the minimum of delay;
  • Be fully consulted about all aspects of your care in language you can understand. You have the right to use qualified interpreter services;
  • Choose who will be involved in discussion about you or the provision of services to you;
  • A private and confidential service;
  • See your personal files, notes and other documents and to change these where the information is incorrect or inappropriate;
  • Personal privacy;
  • Refuse service providers entry to your home;
  • Have somebody of your choice support you or speak on your behalf (advocate); and
  • Comment on, or complain about, health services you have received.

You have the option to:

  • Participate (or not) in decisions about your health;
  • Refuse care or services provided by unqualified people, including students; and
  • Participate (or not) in research.
