About Housing

Beginning a new life in a new country can create many challenges for Migrants and Refugees. A signficant issue for many is finding somewhere to live and creating a new home. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship website provides some useful information to assist migrants to find housing. This website includes information about:

• What do I need to know about renting a house?
• What is public housing?
• What do I need to know about buying or building a house?
• How do I get legal assistance?

The Beginning a Life in Australia booklets welcome newly-arrived migrants to Australia. This booklet includes information for each state on the types of settlement services available and advice on where to go to for assistance. It includes a chapter on housing. This information is available in English and is translated into 24 community languages for each state and territory.

Assistance for Refugees and Humanitarian Entrants

There are also a number of organisatons in Tasmania that can assist humanitarian entrants (refugees) with finding housing:

• In Southern Tasmania Centacare is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to provide settlement services to refugee families and individuals located in the Hobart area. The aim for the program is to provide a six month holistic case-management service that addresses the ongoing individual settlement needs of each family.
• In the North and North West Tasmania contact the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), MRC workers can assist with finding appropriate on-arrival accommodation and assistance is given to find secure, stable, affordable and appropriate longer term accommodation.
