Using a Dam

Dams are used to prevent the transmission of infections from the genitals to the mouth or the mouth to the genitals, specifically the vulva and the anus.Instructional diagram on how to use a dam

To use remove the dam from its packaging and lay it flat covering the entire vulva, (both the vaginal opening and clitoris), holding the edges of the dam. Do not stretch the dam.

For anal, cover anus using a new dam. Do not stretch the dam.

Optional: Moisten the vulva or anal area with water-based lubricant, before putting the dam in place, taking care not to leave lubricant on your fingers. Lubricant on the fingers may make it difficult to hold the dam in place.

Always use a new dam if you switch from oral/anal to oral/vaginal sex to reduce the risk of infection.

Do not expose to direct sunlight. Store in a cool, dry place, at room temperature. Heat and light accelerate the degradation of latex film.
