Mental Health Services, North West Tasmania

Mental Health Services provide both inpatient services (based at North West Regional Hospital), and a range of specialist community services. 

General adult mental health services and child and adolescent mental health services are provided from bases at Devonport and Burnie, whereas the older person's mental health service provides outreach from Burnie. 

There is a dedicated crisis assessment and treatment team operating seven (7) days a weeks that manages referrals from the mental health line, and provides emergency response to urgent referrals.

A range of specialist mental health treatment services is delivered in the North West as follows:

  • Acute inpatient and hospital based services located at the NWRH providing 24 hour care and treatment, 7 days a week. These services include:
    • Spencer Clinic – a 19 bed hospital unit
    • Clozapine clinic
    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
    • Consultation liaison services
  • Community based mental health care and treatment services across three service streams:
    • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for children and young people between the ages of 0 and 18 years;
    • Adult Community Mental Health Services for people aged 18 to 65 years, including a mental health crisis response through Crisis Assessment Triage and Treatment (CATT) services; and
    • Older Persons Mental Health Services for people over 65 years; and
  • The THS continues to deliver the following statewide mental health services that are accessible to North West clients based on clinical needs:
    • Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) (8 beds)
    • Millbrook Rise Centre including Tyenna blue (6 beds) Tyenna green (11 beds) and Clyde unit  (10 beds)
    • Tolosa Street –(12 beds)
    • Roy Fagan Centre  (42 beds including Dementia unit)
    • Mother and baby unit (contracted through a private provider)
    • Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS)
    • Mental Health Services Helpline.
