Tasmanian Rural Generalist Scholarship 2018 - Building Medical Workforce Capacity in Rural and Remote Tasmania

The Building Medical Workforce Capacity in Rural and Remote Tasmania project includes the Tasmanian Rural Generalist Scholarship (TRGS) that aims to support career pathways to rural generalist practice in Tasmania, and assist the Tasmanian Health Service to attract, employ and retain medical graduates in rural and regional health services.

Four scholarships valued at $15,000 each are available to University of Tasmania medical student graduates (2 from Launceston Clinical School and 2 from North West Rural Clinical School). These scholarships will be administered by the Rural Generalist Coordinating Council.

Scholarship Dates:

  • August, 2018 - Scholarship applications open
  • 2 September, 2018 - Scholarship applications close
  • 14 September, 2018 - Scholarship recipients notified of outcomes on or before this date
  • 28 September, 2018 - Final day recipients can return notification of acceptance

Application Process

Step 1 - Ensure you meet all eligibility criteria below:

  • I am an Australian or New Zealand permanent resident
  • I am due to graduate from the University of Tasmania Launceston Clinical School or North West Rural Clinical School in 2018
  • I have signed a contract with the Tasmanian Health Service to complete my intern year in 2019 in the North or North West of Tasmania
  • I include a complete Tasmania Rural Generalist Pathway membership form
  • I agree to complete a rural primary care intern rotation in the North West or North of Tasmania in my intern year
  • I agree to complete a GP RMO rotation in North West or the North of Tasmania in my PGY2 year
  • I agree to the payment schedule (Item 7 dot point 3) as outlined in this document

Step 2 - Complete and submit the TRGS application form by the required dates

Selection Process

  • Only complete and legible applications received during the application period will be assessed
  • Any applicants who do not meet the eligibility criteria will be excluded
  • The Scholarship Selection Panel will assess and rank remaining applicants against the five Selection Criteria statements according to an agreed scoring matrix
  • Applicants who are ranked highly will be asked to submit supporting documentation such as proof of qualifications , employment and registration (or equivalent)
  • The most highly ranked applicants will be offered scholarships electronically using the email address provided on the application form
  • The applicant must accept or decline the offer by responding to the Scholarship Selection Panel as instructed in the offer
  • If an applicant declines as offer of a scholarship, the scholarship will be offered to the next highest ranked applicant
  • If an applicant chooses to accept the offer they will be required to provide evidence as per the Payment Schedule (see Item 7 - Dot point 3)

Payment of Scholarships

On acceptance of the scholarship offer - scholarships will be made as per the Payment Schedule:

  • 1 x $5,0000 at completion of medical school in 2018 and signature of employment with THS in the North or North West in 2019 upon receipt of evidence
  • 1 x $5,000 at completion of intern year in the North or North West of Tasmania, with receipt of evidence of passing intern year, including a rural primary care intern position, and gaining general registration in early 2020
  • 1 x $5,000 at completion of PGY2, with receipt of evidence of successful completion of PGY2 at the North or North West of Tasmania, including GP RMO rotation and/or dedicated TRGP RMO year, and application for GP training in Tasmania
