Director - Rural Pathways News:

Last week I had the pleasure of joining the first year University of Tasmania medical students for part of rural week at Camp Clayton. they visited the north and north west hospitals and clinical schools, explored some local attractions and participated in Wilderness Scenario Activities. We hope you enjoyed your week and look forward to seeing you in rural Tasmania again in the future.

The final year medical students are completing their portfolio interviews this week and will be putting in their rotation preferences for 2018 soon. The rural primary care intern positions are accredited and confirmed for 2018 so please consider these in your preferences. It will be a great opportunity to see your own patients with close supervision, and have an excellent teaching program.

We have filled te NWRH TRMGP RMO positions to commence in 2018. Congratulations to Drs Mafada Abdullah, Aaron Hawkins, Jasmin Tan and Norhalisa Termidzi. We look forward to you joining the TRMGP.

We are also happy to hear that HR Plus has secured funding for the Scottsdale GP RMO position to continue at the LGH for 2018 and 2019.

For those looking to do registrar training with GPTT, second round applications for AGPT will open on 26 September, 2017 and close at 10:00am on 9 October, 2017.

If I was told I will be working in the North West of Tasmania 10 years ago, I would have smiled and wondered how this would all work out having grown up in cities. My introduction to country work was as a medical student. We spent one week in Derby, WA and the surrounding remote communities. I was fascinated by rural work and applied to be a rural clinical school student in Narrogin, a wheat belt town in Western Australia. This was my best year in medical school and my aspiration to be a rural doctor begun. I came to the North West of Tasmania as a rural generalist resident. We were fascinated by the natural beauty of the region. I love the variety I see in my day at work and feel so fortunate to be able to drive along the beautiful coast daily to work without being stuck in traffic. I am grateful for the diverse role being a GP Registrar, working with a great team at Saunders Street Clinic, Wynyard and be involved with teaching medical students as well as a research project at the Rural Clinical School in Burnie. We got married earlier with year in Penguin and look forward to working and living in this beautiful part of the world.
