Food and drinks high in energy and protein can be useful if you have lost weight recently without trying, have a poor appetite, or are finding it hard to eat enough.

Fortified milk

  • This can be used in hot or cold drinks, or as a substitute for milk in your custard, soup or casseroles.
  • To make one cup of fortified milk, add two tablespoons of milk powder to one cup of full-cream milk. Whisk together.
  • You can use commercial energy powders such as Sustagen® or Ensure® in place of milk powder in these recipes.

Banana smoothie

  • Blend together a cup of fortified milk, a banana and a scoop of ice cream – with honey or sugar to taste.
  • You can also add strawberries, blueberries or mango or any other fruit (fresh, frozen or tinned).

High energy Milo®

Add two teaspoons of Milo® to one cup of fortified milk. This can be served hot (warmed on the stove or in a microwave) or cold (with a scoop of ice cream). You can try the same drink using coffee instead of, or as well as, Milo®.

Readymade supplement drinks

You can buy ready-made supplement drinks from supermarkets or chemists.
