About Us

The Visual Arts Committees major aim is to maintain the LGH Art Collection and manage the ARTrium Gallery. It remains our goal to use works of art to help improve the wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors to the Launceston General Hospital.

The Visual Arts Committee is a strong advocate of the ‘ Arts in Health’ program. Like architecture the interior design, the art work we have around us can significantly influence the way we feel on a day to day basis. Whilst art is not central to the function of healthcare there are many benefits which art can bring to a hospital environment. This has become very evident in the ARTrium Gallery where patients exercise on a daily basis surrounded by works of art. Exhibitions are mounted every 4-5 weeks by local Tasmanian artists.

Research into the design of hospitals and the effect of the environment on patients and staff demonstrates that our surroundings have a clear impact on the effectiveness with which treatment and care is both delivered and received. In addition to these positive outcomes , carefully selected artworks can have a mediating effect between the individual and the institution, helping to make staff more aware of their surroundings and providing a more comfortable and less threatening environment for patients.
