Department of Health Meningococcal ACWY Immunisation Program

Progress Report One

Background

  • This is a progress report on the 2018 Tasmanian Meningococcal ACWY Immunisation Program. This includes an Urgent Response in the area of a community outbreak in northern suburban Hobart, and a Statewide Program.
  • Data come from several sources, including the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) and Public Health Services’ (PHS) records of the distribution of vaccine.
  • AIR is maintained by the Australian Government. It is a database of immunisation records submitted by healthcare providers. It is a relatively new system, and using it to monitor this Program necessitates downloads and local manipulations of raw data. The process of data being submitted to AIR and then downloaded, cleaned and analysed means there may be long delays between an immunisation encounter and the data being reportable. This process and incomplete or delayed reporting of immunisations, mean that the data below are an underestimate of current immunisation coverage.

Previous program for 15 to 19 year olds, August 2017 to April 2018

  • A state-funded program to immunise 15 to 19 year olds with meningococcal ACWY vaccine was undertaken between August 2017 and April 2018 through schools and general practice. The limit of eligibility for this program was being born on or after 1 August 1997, and this has been maintained in the current Program.
  • Before the current program began, 20 644 Tasmanians aged 6 weeks to 20 years had already received a meningococcal ACWY vaccine; the majority were aged 15 to 20 years.

The 2018 Tasmanian Meningococcal ACWY Immunisation Program

  • The 2018 Tasmanian Meningococcal ACWY Immunisation Program was announced on 26 July 2018.
  • The total cohort of all Tasmanians aged 6 weeks to 20 years is 136 289 people.
  • At 5 September, there were 20 644 Tasmanians aged 6 weeks to 20 years recorded on  the AIR as having received a meningococcal ACWY vaccine before  the current program began on 26 July 2018;  the majority were aged 15 to 20 years and received under the school based program.
  • The number still requiring immunisation as of 26 July 2018 was 114 125.

Vaccine distribution to providers since late July 2018

  • To 5 September 2018, PHS has distributed 75 845 doses of vaccine state-wide. Of this:
  • General Practice has received 56 144 doses (74%), and pharmacies have received 2 960 doses.
  • The following immunisation coverage data were extracted from the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) on 5 September 2018. Coverage data are an underestimate.
  • Since the announcement of the Program on 26 July 2018 an additional 43 898 Tasmanians in the eligible cohort have been recorded on AIR as immunised. This represents 38% of the remaining eligible cohort.
  • Including the earlier state-funded teenage program, a total of 64 542 (47%) Tasmanians in the eligible cohort have been immunised state-wide since 1 January 2017.

Immunisation coverage estimates

  • Since the announcement of the Program on 26 July 2018 an additional 43 898 Tasmanians in the eligible cohort have been recorded on AIR as immunised. This represents 38% of the remaining eligible cohort.
  • Including the earlier state-funded teenage program, a total of 64 542 (47%) Tasmanians in the eligible cohort have been immunised state-wide since 1 January 2017.

Immunisation Coverage in the outbreak area

  • In the area included in the Urgent Response to the community outbreak (New Town to Bridgewater) 77% of the eligible cohort have been immunised.

Immunisation Coverage by region

  • The proportion of the eligible cohort immunised varies by region: 65% in the South, 38% in the North and 22% in the North West.

Immunisations administered to the eligible cohort by provider groups and recorded in AIR

  • General practice have given 71% of the total vaccine administered.
  • Councils have given 16%, predominantly through school-based clinics for 15 to 19 year olds in late 2017 and early 2018.

  • Pharmacies have administered 456 doses.
  • School-based provision in the outbreak area has started and of 10 schools visited so far, 676 children have been immunised.

Coverage by age-group

  • In the month since the Program began, the number of immunisations has been similar across the 3 youngest 5-year age groups.
