What we do

Our nurses working in the Day Oncology Unit or ‘chemo unit’ are skilled Registered Nurses, who are trained in the safe administration of anti-cancer treatments. These nurses also have extra training in cancer care, including how different cancer treatments work, the potential side effects of those treatments and an understanding of the challenges of living with cancer.

The nurses working in the Day Oncology Unit as often referred to as chemotherapy nurses or ‘chemo nurse’. Not all patients having cancer treatment have chemotherapy. Our nurses provide a range of different treatments, procedures and supports including;

• Education about treatment, side effects and what to expect on your cancer journey
• Dressings and care for access devices
• Cannulation for treatment
• Administration (transfusion) of blood and blood products like platelets
• Administering (infusion) cancer treatments like immunotherapies or chemotherapy.

How we can help

Our nurses can;

• Speak with you on the phone if you have any questions during or shortly after your treatment.
• Assess and monitor any side effects and help you manage them.
• Listen to you and your family and support you with any concerns or challenges your might have.
• Answer questions or help find the answers with you.
• Assist in arranging your next appointments and talk through your plan of care.
• Talk with doctors on your behalf for things you might have forgotten to mention in your appointment.
• Provide you with supportive care information.
• Link you with other services and supports.
